TL;DR: Use less Fisher Paykel washer detergent than you think: an HE formula only, measured with the cap and reduced further for soft water. Overdosing is the usual cause of the Suds Loc message and of stiff, musty laundry.

The best Fisher Paykel washer detergent habit is to use less than you think you need. Use a high-efficiency detergent only, measure it with the cap or a measuring cup instead of pouring by eye, and cut the dose further if your water is soft. Too much detergent is the usual reason a Fisher Paykel washer stops with Suds Loc, rinses poorly or leaves clothes stiff and smelly.

Detergent typeHigh-efficiency (HE) only in an HE washer
DoseThe amount on the label for the load size; less for light soil
Soft waterUse less, because soft water makes suds go further
Suds LocThe washer detected too many suds and paused to clear them
Fabric softenerUse sparingly; it adds to residue

How much detergent should you use in a Fisher Paykel washer?

Use the amount printed on the detergent label for your load size and soil level, and treat that as a ceiling rather than a target. Modern high-efficiency detergents are concentrated, so the line on the cap is smaller than the scoop your parents used. For a normally soiled medium load a single measured cap is usually right, and for lightly soiled clothes you can often go below the line without losing cleaning power.

Fisher Paykel top-loaders use relatively little water, which is why they are sensitive to excess detergent. A heavy pour does not clean better, it just leaves more soap in the fabric than the rinse can carry away. If your laundry comes out dull or stiff, reduce the dose before you change anything else, and check our Fisher Paykel washer cycle settings guide to be sure the cycle suits the load.

Why does using the wrong detergent cause Suds Loc?

A washer showing Suds Loc has detected too many suds and paused to clear them. Using too much detergent, or a non-HE detergent in an HE machine, is the usual cause. Regular detergent is designed for large volumes of water and foams far more than a low-water washer expects. The foam cushions the water, hides the real level and slows draining and spinning, so the machine protects itself by pausing, draining and rinsing in stages.

The cure is the same each time: correct the detergent, then clear the foam. Run a rinse or short cycle without adding more soap, and let the washer work through the suds. Our Suds Loc page explains the display, and if the message returns with the right detergent in the right amount, a drainage restriction is the next thing to rule out.

Measuring to the line, not by eye, is the habit that prevents most suds problems.

Does soft water change the dose?

Yes. Soft water lets suds build far more easily than hard water, so the same measured dose that works in one house can overdo it in another. If your home has a water softener, start at the low end of the label range and watch the final rinse: if you still see foam on the water as it drains, cut the next dose. If you have very hard water, you may need slightly more, or a water conditioner, to get the same cleaning.

A simple test helps. After a normal wash, stop the washer during the last rinse and look at the water. A thin, quickly vanishing layer is fine, while a thick blanket of suds means you used too much. Adjust one load at a time instead of making a big change, and write the dose that works on the machine lid or in your notes.

How do you stop soap residue from building up?

Soap residue builds slowly. Excess detergent and fabric softener leave a film on the bowl and the drain path that catches lint and grows odor. Run a monthly cleaning cycle with the product your owner’s manual recommends, wipe the lid, the rim and the dispenser area, and leave the lid open after use so the bowl dries. Our guide to the Fisher Paykel washer clutch care for SmartDrive and AquaSmart washers covers care of the parts below the bowl.

Use fabric softener sparingly, and never pour liquid detergent or softener directly onto clothes if your model has a dispenser. When you load, spread the items evenly around the bowl rather than packing them on one side, which also keeps the balance check from interrupting a spin. The explanation of how the washer monitors fill, suds and balance shows why an even load matters.

What are the signs you are using too much?

The signs are easy to spot once you know them. Clothes feel stiff or slick after drying. Towels lose their absorbency. A musty smell appears in the bowl or on the laundry. The washer pauses with a suds message, or the final rinse still shows foam. Dark clothes may show a chalky film. Every one of these points to a long-term overdose, and a dose cut is usually the whole fix.

If the signs persist after you reduce the dose and run a clearing cycle, the cause may be a partially blocked drain or a worn component, and a visit is the safe next step. Do not keep pushing cycles through a washer that is repeatedly stopping, since the strain falls on the pump and the motor.

One more habit is worth building: measure for the load you actually have, not the washer’s maximum size. A half-full bowl needs a half dose, and a lightly soiled load of gym clothes or sheets needs less again. Keep the cap or cup beside the washer so the habit costs nothing, and the same bottle will last noticeably longer.

Frequently asked questions
How much detergent should I use in a Fisher Paykel top-load washer?
Use the amount on the label for your load size, measured with the cap, and go lower for light soil or soft water. More detergent does not clean better in a low-water washer.
Can I use regular detergent in a high-efficiency washer?
No. Regular detergent foams too much for an HE washer and is a leading cause of the Suds Loc message. Use a detergent marked HE.
How do I get rid of Suds Loc?
Reduce the detergent dose, use an HE formula and run a rinse or short cycle to clear the foam. If it keeps returning with the right detergent, have the drain path checked.
When should I book a visit?
Book one if Suds Loc recurs after you correct the detergent or the washer drains slowly. You can schedule a visit online.
