Fisher Paykel washer safety monitoring is built from several small watchdogs, and the best known is the auto drain, which is not a fault. On FabricSmart top-load washers, if you pause the cycle or touch the power button and then leave the washer sitting for about three minutes, the machine drains itself down to a safe level as an anti-drowning precaution. The others are a fill timer, a suds sensor and a balance check, and each one produces a message that looks alarming but usually has a plain cause. The display message for the first one has its own page, ADR auto drain, and the fill timer is covered on the no tap page.
Why does a Fisher Paykel washer drain by itself after a pause?
The washer is built to leave the bowl safe when nobody is watching. If you press pause or the power button mid-cycle and then walk away, the washer waits roughly three minutes and then drains down on its own. The display shows ADR so you know the draining is intentional. Touching any button stops the auto-draining, and pressing start resumes the cycle. It does not mean the water-level sensor or the control board has failed.
This matters because a quietly draining washer can look like a leak or a pump problem to someone who did not see the pause. If the washer starts draining a few minutes after you stepped away and a single button press halts it, you are watching the safety routine do its job. Our guide to how the Fisher Paykel SmartDrive works explains the motor and drive that fill, wash and drain the bowl.
How does the washer know the water is not arriving?
The fill is watched by a timer and a level sensor working together. When a cycle starts, the inlet valve opens and the washer expects the bowl to reach its target level within a set time. If it does not reach the level in about 8 minutes, the washer stops and flags a fill problem instead of running a dry or half-full wash. On digital top-loaders you see the words no tAP, a beep every few seconds and flashing HOT or COLD lights. Older front-loaders show No Tap with beeping, and classic SmartDrive top-loaders signal it with flashing progress lights.
The message names the water supply, not the controller. The tap is the most common cause by far, followed by a kinked hose, a blocked mesh screen at the hose or valve end, or low supply pressure. Our Fisher Paykel washer inlet hose and filter care guide shows how to check the screen safely, and the no tap error page lists the signs by model.

What is the washer sensing when it shows Suds Loc?
Suds Loc means the machine detected too many suds and paused to clear them. Foam is a problem because it cushions the water, hides the true level and can slow draining and spinning. The washer reacts by pausing, draining and rinsing in small steps until the foam is under control. Using too much detergent, or a detergent that is not meant for a high-efficiency machine, is the usual cause, and soft water makes both worse.
That is why the fix is chemistry first. Cut the dose to the amount on the label, use a high-efficiency formula only, and run a rinse or short cycle to clear what is already in the bowl. A real drainage restriction is the only cause on the list that points to hardware, so it comes last. Our tips on Fisher Paykel washer detergent dosing cover how to prevent a repeat.
How does the balance check protect the machine?
Before and during the spin the washer monitors how smoothly the bowl turns. A bunched towel or a single heavy item pulls the load to one side, and the machine would shake as it speeds up. The control senses that and either redistributes the load with a pause and a gentle re-tumble or stops and shows an out-of-balance message. Adding or removing a few items so the load is even usually resolves it.
The washer will not push through an unbalanced spin because that would stress the suspension and could move the cabinet. If the message keeps returning with a well-mixed small load, check that the washer is level and that all four feet are firmly planted. Our guide to Fisher Paykel washer vibration issues explains the leveling checks.
When is a message actually a fault?
A message is a signpost, not a diagnosis. If ADR appears, the cycle just needs a button press. If no tAP appears and the tap is open, the hose is straight and the screen is clean, the inlet valve may be failing to open, and that part needs a technician. If Suds Loc returns even with the right detergent in the right amount, a restriction in the drain path or a sensing issue is worth inspecting. And if an out-of-balance message keeps appearing on every load, suspension or leveling is the likely cause.
Anything that involves removing the cabinet, touching the pump or checking wiring belongs with a technician. You can read about the washer safety messages on the Fisher Paykel washer repair page, and a visit is available when a message returns after the simple checks.
