About Fisher & Paykel washers.

Fisher & Paykel washers are SmartDrive™ and AquaSmart™ top-loaders (GWL/IWL legacy US) and WH front-loaders — discontinued at US retail but widely used and fully serviceable — with the signature "No tap" no-water message and a verified numeric code set.

The fisher paykel washers lineup

Fisher & Paykel washers in the US fall into two platforms. The WH front-load series includes the WH2424F1, WH2424P1, and WH2424P2 (24″ front-loaders), and the older WH7560, WH8060, WH8560, and WH9060 generation. The US top-load machines used the GWL and IWL prefixes (GWL15, GWL11, IWL16) — these are the EcoSmart and SmartDrive™ top-loaders sold in the US, not the modern WA-prefix top-loaders (FabricSmart, WA8560P) which are AU/NZ products and were never sold here. An honest note: Fisher & Paykel has largely exited the US laundry market and these are legacy/discontinued retail products — but they remain widely used in US homes and are fully serviceable with available parts. You can review Fisher & Paykel’s current product direction at fisherpaykel.com/us and the washer models we service in our model directory.

Fisher & Paykel washers technologies that matter

The signature technology in Fisher & Paykel top-load washers is SmartDrive™ — a brushless DC direct-drive motor that connects directly to the wash bowl with no gearbox, belt, or pulley. No-gearbox direct-drive means fewer mechanical wear points and a quieter wash, but when a motor, control module, or bowl-engagement (clutch) fault occurs it is a technician repair, not a user-replaceable part. The AquaSmart™ platform, used on later top-loaders with an alphanumeric display, is a separate control generation that shares many code numbers with SmartDrive™ but uses different meanings for some (notably codes 58 and 246, which are AquaSmart™-only and must never be labelled SmartDrive codes). The WH front-loaders are a conventional front-load design using a drum motor with its own E7:xx motor-error code family. The WashSmart™ and QuickSmart™ badges on some models refer to the control interface, not the drive platform. The most important single display message is “No tap” / “no tAP” — a no-water-fill condition that is usually resolved at the tap, hose, or mesh filter before a technician is needed.

Common fisher paykel washers problems and codes

Fisher & Paykel washers use different code schemes by platform. On SmartDrive™ and AquaSmart™ top-loaders:

  • “No tap” / “no tAP” — water not reached in 8 minutes. Check: both taps open, hoses unkinking, inlet-hose mesh filters clean. DIY first; inlet valve if supply is confirmed good.
  • Code 37 — pump blocked, not draining. Clear pump filter and drain path first.
  • Code 38 — pressure sensor fault (reads empty during agitate).
  • Code 39 — pressure tube blocked, kinked, or off.
  • Code 40 — bowl did not disengage (clutch fault) — technician.
  • Codes 58 / 246 — AquaSmart™ ONLY — never SmartDrive. Code 58 = pressure transducer fault; Code 246 = inlet valve fault.

On WH front-loaders: word warnings (Door Open, No Tap, Out Of Bal, Suds Loc) + E7:xx motor codes (E7:00 speed sync, E7:01 stall, E7:02 loss of phase, E7:03 over-current, E7:04 current-sense, E7:06 brown-out, E7:07 winding over-temp, E7:08 bridge over-temp, E7:09 self-test) + Err NN numeric codes (Err 10, 12, 37, 74, 75, 105, 235). Bare E1, E6, and E9 are not genuine Fisher & Paykel front-loader codes. For the full code guide, see our washer error-code guides.

Maintaining Fisher & Paykel washers

  • Leave both hot and cold taps fully open at all times to prevent “No tap” / “no tAP”.
  • Clean the inlet hose mesh filters at both the tap end and the valve end every 6 months.
  • Do not overload — an overloaded bowl causes “Out Of Bal” on WH front-loaders and clutch strain on SmartDrive top-loaders.
  • Use the correct detergent dose — too much causes “Suds Loc” on WH front-loaders.
  • On front-loaders, wipe the door boot seal after each wash and leave the door ajar to prevent mould.

Repairing vs replacing a Fisher & Paykel washer

Because Fisher & Paykel has exited the US laundry market, there is no new F&P washer to replace an existing one with — which makes repair the natural choice for a unit that is otherwise in good condition. The SmartDrive™ platform is known for its durability, and parts for the GWL, IWL, and WH generations are available through specialist appliance-parts suppliers. The economics of repair depend on the fault: a “No tap” message resolved at the tap, hose, or filter is a zero-cost fix; an inlet valve or pump is a parts-and-labour repair from $129 that typically pays back quickly on a machine with years of life left; a motor-control module or SmartDrive™ motor replacement is a larger repair worth evaluating against the machine’s age and overall condition. Our experienced technicians will give an honest, clear quote before any work starts — the total depends on the diagnosis. When to call for Fisher & Paykel washer repair

SmartDrive™ motors, clutch assemblies, pressure sensors, inlet valves, drain pumps, WH front-load motor-control modules, and door boot seals are best handled by experienced, specialist technicians who can read the correct code for the correct platform and fit Fisher & Paykel-specific parts from trusted suppliers. Note the exact display message or code and your GWL, IWL, or WH model number when you book. Diagnostic visits start from $129, with a 30-day labor warranty on the workmanship; the total depends on parts and diagnosis.
